I love how music can tell a story, or perfectly describe our own story. How it lifts us up, moves us to tears or gets our adrenaline going. Music is so powerful and while I like pretty much any genre of music, sometimes I just need a song that gives me a boost.
The song, “Battles” by The Afters, does exactly that for me. All the lyrics in this song are powerful, but I really like the refrain.
“You’re going before me and oceans are parting
You’re fighting my battles
When my feet are failing and my heart is shaking
You’re fighting my battles”
“You’re fighting my battles
You’re fighting my battles
You’re fighting my battles”
These words tell us that we don’t have to fight our battles no matter what they are. God has and will continue to fight for us. The Bible has many verses to remind us that we don’t have to fight our battles. God WANTS to do it for us.
Deuteronomy 3:22 – “Do not be afraid of them; the LORD your God himself will fight for you.”
Exodus 14:14 – “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Deuteronomy 20:4 – “For the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”
Since God willingly agrees to fight our battles, it means three things:
- He LOVES us more than words can describe. His love for us is wide, long, high and deep. Put your tape measure away because we can never begin to measure how much God loves us.
- He has the superpower STRENGTH needed to take on the toughest of battles. He is always prepared and has what it takes to go to battle for us.
- He achieves VICTORY. He has one goal in mind, victory. What we perceive to be victory might look different than what God has in mind. To me, victory is getting pregnant and having our own biological child. To God, victory might involve the transformation of my heart or deepening my relationship with Him.
I don’t know about you, but hearing those words brings me peace. I no longer have to fight a battle I actually have no way to win on my own in the first place. I wouldn’t have the slightest idea how to win the battle my husband and I are facing. Thank goodness God does. Give Him your battle. He wants to fight it for you.
