June E+DAY

I was getting groceries over Memorial weekend, when an elderly lady came up to me in the tomato section. She started sharing how one of the tomatoes she’d gotten were spicy. I listened as she told me she was having lots of family over, but her husband is home bound so she does most of the work. You could tell it was a lot for her, but nevertheless, she was excited to have so many people over. I told her it’s a sign of how much you are loved. Before she walked away she said, “You made my day. A young gal like you taking the time to talk to me.”

As I walked away I thought, I didn’t even do anything. But then I realized, my simple act of opening my mouth to talk and using my ears to listen made this sweet lady feel recognized and valued. Such a simple act that cost me nothing, but made an impact on that woman’s day. It reminded me that encouragement comes in all shapes and sizes. In today’s world, the bigger the better, but grandiose ideas are not a prerequisite for encouragement. Consistent and committed encouragement, no matter the size or cost, is what matters.

Today, use the simple things, or most likely the things we take for granted, to encourage someone else.
